Heart Warrior Stories Alicia W.

Savannah is an 18-month-old with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, heterotaxy, and cleft lip/palate. She was born on June 6, 2019, and spent 110 days at the children’s hospital of Philadelphia. During that time she had the Norwood procedure. She ended up having a lot of swelling in her chest and needed an emergency chest opening and suction which then turned into being placed on ECMO for a week. A month later, while still inpatient Savannah went into cardiac arrest and needed CPR for an hour which then resulted in another week on ECMO and finally receiving a permanent pacemaker. We were able to go home on September 12.

Unfortunately, we were back and forth to the hospital often because of low oxygen or feeding difficulties. On December 19 she had the Glenn procedure. This was complicated by a paralyzed diaphragm and immediate narrowing in the Glenn circulation. We spent another 100 days inpatient trying to work out all the complications. We discharged on March 26. Since then she has been back and forth to the hospital multiple times. She’s overall doing very well though!
