Heart Warrior Stories Dana S.

My husband and I lived in Montana when our daughter was diagnosed with having congenital heart disease. There is no Pediatric Cardiology Surgeon in Montana so my husband and I had to temporarily move so we could be close to a hospital that could operate on her. So we moved. For 8 months. My daughter has 6 major defects. Hypo-plastic right heart syndrome (where the right side of her heart didn’t develop) is the worst.

After my daughter was born my husband left to go to officer training school for the military. She was 9 days old. My daughter was still in the NICU. At 21 days old I brought my daughter home by myself on my husband and I’s 5th wedding anniversary. My husband came home when she was 3 months old. At 4 months my daughter had her second heart procedure and at 6 months old she had her first open-heart surgery. She recovered beautifully and we left the hospital after only 6 days.

At 7 months old we were able to move back into our home in Montana. My daughter was 7 months old before she was able to sleep in a bed that wasn’t a pack n’ play or a hospital bed. At 7 months old she was finally able to sleep in HER crib.

After everything we’ve been through at 10 months old, the military had us pack up and move across the country. Before my daughter was even a year old she had lived in three different states. We have been the definition of adapt and overcome.
